What is VyprVPN?
VyprVPN is a Swiss virtual private network (VPN) service with endpoints in more than 70 countries and with two different paid-for subscription tiers. It has a good range of security features and clients, plus support and documentation for plenty of devices and operating systems.

VyprVPN – Features and usability
A recent update to the VyprVPN client has given it a more polished look and feel. It’s dispensed with throughput graphs, instead showing a violet uptime tracker, connection and disconnection buttons and the endpoint country you’re in.
As before, you can easily connect to your choice of geographical endpoint location and save favourite endpoints. There’s still a full range of advanced options available to help you tweak the VPN to your precise needs, including automatic connection on start-up, automatic reconnection, and a kill switch to prevent any traffic from being sent over an unsecured internet connection.
Other settings include your choice of connection protocol and – for premium users – an obfuscated Chameleon mode that endeavours to hide the fact that you’re using a VPN, tailored for use in countries with restrictive national internet connections such as China.
VyprVPN – Performance
Endpoints/VPN | UK | Netherlands | United States |
VyprVPN HTTP | 78.88Mbps | 90.56Mbps | 23.68Mbps |
VyprVPN FTP | 87.48Mbps | 95.37Mbps | 17.48Mbps |
VyprVPN has put in some disappointing speed test performances in recent months, but our August tests have shown some improvements to all endpoints except the US, although Vypr’s performance remains below average among its rivals. Fortunately, its connections are pretty consistent and – with the exception of the US – fast enough to provide decent performance for most online tasks.
UK HTTP transfers came in at 9.86MB/s (78.88Mbps), with FTP reading 10.9MB/s. In the Netherlands, we got a decent 11.32MB/s HTTP speed and a resurgent 11.9MB/s FTP speed.
US throughput was devastatingly poor, unfortunately. Despite repeated retesting and optimisation attempts, the best HTTP download speed we got via our high-speed link was just 2.96MB/s, with FTP transfers struggling along at 2.19MB/s.
VyprVPN is currently one of the most reliable services around for video streaming: we watched Netflix US, iPlayer, All 4 and US version of Shudder without any trouble at all. However, it’s been picked up by Crunchyroll’s recently boosted efforts at detecting VPN services, so we weren’t able to get our fix of US-only anime.

Should I buy VyprVPN?
VyprVPN formerly logged customer IP addresses, but in November 2018 parent company Golden Frog introduced VyprVPN’s new no-logging policy. This is backed up by an independent audit carried out by Leviathan Security to prove that no personally identifiable information is collected on the service’s users. The company says that it will carry out audits on a regular basis.
VyprVPN provides dedicated apps for a huge range of platforms, from Windows, macOS and Linux desktop PCs to smartphones, routers and NAS devices. Golden Frog also provides extensive documentation for correctly using its VPN service in a variety of scenarios.
A standard three-simultaneous-connection subscription costs £43.50 per year, or is available on a month-to-month basis for a very reasonable £6.90. It’s good value, with an excellent range of features.
For those who need it, its £57.50 per year Premium subscription includes a cloud VPN server image that you can deploy to hosted servers on AWS, DigitalOcean and VirtualBox. VyprVPN has discontinued its three-day free trial, but a 30-day money-back guarantee is available for both packages, so you can be sure they meet your needs.
Verdict
VyprVPN is one of just a handful of services that backs up a no-logging promise with an independent audit, and this is genuinely admirable. Its monthly and annual subscription fees are great value compared to most of its rivals and it provides plenty of connection and security features.
However, although it’s fast enough for most purposes and can handle most video streaming services without detection, we weren’t impressed by its performance in our data throughput tests, particularly in the US. Although European speeds have improved since last month, performance has been a conspicuous issue across the last three rounds of testing we’ve carried out.
If you need more raw speed, and don’t mind the lack of a logging audit, Private Internet Access is great for both security and cost-conscious users, while video fans should look to NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
